It’s been quite a few years since Alexandre Soares started his musical career alongside Vítor Rua and Toli César Machado in GNR. He ended up parting ways with the band, initiating a personalized career that is punctuated by solo records, stints with the bands Zero and Três Tristes Tigres and production work for the debut album by Mesa. Jorge Coelho is the guitar player in Mesa and, besides being involved in other bands like Zen and Cosmic City Blues, has worked composing music for movies like “Coisa Ruim”. Both are, therefore, experienced and versatile musicians, capable of functioning just as well in the realm of pop as in that of instrumental music.
The musical meeting of these musicians ended up actually happening. With two guitars and two amplifiers, Alexandre Soares and Jorge Coelho let themselves be led by first and seminal thoughts as an excuse for a guitar dialog under the sign of improv. It’s that meeting that “Cães aos Círculos” documents. More than plain meandering, this work displays 4 untitled tracks with a dirty and vaguely lo-fi sound, ranging between quasi-sketches (check the first two particularly short tracks) and semi-ambient landscapes. Without ever losing its rock foundations, the last track (the longest one) embraces the listener in a dreamlike, nocturnal and arid atmosphere, with a minimalist guitar sound that induces a dramatic rhythm to the track. It is nonetheless in the two first tracks that rock insinuates itself in a more evident way.
“Cães aos Círculos” is a circular work in the way the dialog between the two musicians is established. It is released in an exclusive 7” vinyl format by Bor Land, the ideal way to listen to a work that contains in itself a sense of “readiness”. Free from unnecessary production gimmicks, “Cães aos círculos” is almost a diamond in its rough state, underdeveloped, and it’s a record to listen to with the dedication that vinyl demands. Changing from side A to side B demands a physical interaction with the record, a ritual virtually lost among many music lovers. “Cães aos Círculos” rediscovers that action and what it implies in its relationship to the music. And this is the perfect soundtrack to that rediscovery.
