Carlos Bica is one of the few Portuguese
musicians with international renown who
has influenced European Jazz in an
unmistakable way. Next to the many musical
projects that he has initiated and his work
as a composer for theater, film and dance,
his trio AZUL, with Berlin guitarist Frank
Möbus and New York drummer Jim Black,
has become Bica’s trademark as composer
and double bass player.
SINGLE, which is Carlos Bica’s first double
bass solo CD, reveals the urgent desire of
following pure intuition without questioning
how or why. The purpose of the album is
not to prove the virtuosity of an egocentric,
but most of all, that the sound of the
instrument that springs forth from the
collaboration with the musician, touches the
listener’s soul. The music is the leader and
not the instrument. Here musician and
instrument meet, while both are independent
and discover each other simultaneously.“Single” was recorded at Berlin-Brandenburg
