"Humanautomata" is a piece for robotic orchestra and small ensemble, based on the previous work developed for Phobos - Dysfunctional Robotic Orchestra. "Humanautomata" explores the compositional possibilities of the interaction of a central automated machine (Phobos), with a set of conventional and non conventional instruments operated by musicians. It is intended to combine a hybrid language between written and improvised music, executed by experienced musicians in each of these areas and with an instrumentation as diverse as the Atlas of Utopian Instruments (instrumentarium developed by Sonoscopia), electronics, piano, harp or cello. Composition and musical direction is headed by the austrian composer Lukas Ligeti, whose singularity of language, his previous work with automated instruments and his strong relation with improvisation make him a choice that is both fascinating and surprisingly natural. Lukas Ligeti is a composer, percussionist and assistant professor at the University of California, Irvine. In 2010 he was given the CalArts Alpert Award in Music. Ligeti has composed for Bang On A Can, Kronos Quartet, Eight Blackbird, the American Composers Orchestra, Ensemble Modern and he has performed with John Zorn, Gary Lucas, Marilyn Crispell, to name a few. He was a pioneer in intercultural experimental collaborations, having cofounded Beta Foly and Burkina Electric and worked with folk musicians from Egypt, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
